Since Lord Shiva resides in the holy Mount Kailash, Karaikal Ammaiyar (one of the 63 Nayananmars) thought her feet should not touch the sacred place and she walked towards Mt. Kailash with her head touching the ground. While she was walking with difficulty, Devi Parvati saw her and informed this to Lord Shiva. So Lord Ganesha brought Karaikal Ammaiyar in front of Lord Shiva and Devi Parvati. Devi Parvati asked 'Who is she'. For that Lord Shiva replied 'She is my mother' and welcomed Karaikal Ammaiyar, asked her to sit.
So in all Lord Shiva temples, among 63 Nayanmars, only Karaikal Ammaiyar is found to be in a seated posture while other Nayanmars are found in standing postures.
